Richard Trowbridge

Sir Richard John Trowbridge ( born January 21, 1920 in Hampshire, England; † 4 May 2003 in Portsmouth) was a British Admiral and Governor of the Australian state of Western Australia.

Life

Trowbridge was born in 1920 as the son of a farmer and attended elementary school in Andover. At the age of 15 he joined the Royal Navy. In 1940 he was promoted to Sub - Lieutenant and was mainly used during the Second World War in the Pacific, most recently on the destroyer Wakeful.

After the war Trowbridge was stationed in Singapore until he received in 1956 as a frigate captain in command of the destroyer Carysfort in the Mediterranean. After his return to England in 1962 he received his promotion to Captain and led the command of the Fishery Protection Squadron of 1967-69 and the guided missile destroyer Hampshire, one of the flagships of the British Navy. From 1970-75 he served as a flag officer.

In 1980 he was appointed Governor of Western Australia. After leaving office, he returned to England in 1983 and settled in Portsmouth. He was the last Briton, who held the office of the Governor of Western Australia.

Trowbridge died in 2003 from lung cancer. During his tenure he oversaw the renovation of the Britannia, during which used in construction, asbestos has been replaced; this was probably the cause of his disease.
