Richard Wilbur

Richard Purdy Wilbur (* March 1, 1921 in New York City ) is an American poet and writer, as well as two-time Pulitzer Prize winner.

Biography

Richard Wilbur was born the son of Lawrence Newlson Wilbur and his wife Helen Purdy in New York City and grew up in North Caldwell. At the age of eight, he published his first poems. In 1942 he graduated from Amherst College with honors and served during World War II in the U.S. Army. After the war he graduated from Harvard University and was a member of the Harvard Society of Fellows. Richard Wilbur taught at Harvard University (1950-1954), Wesleyan University (1955-1957), and finally at Smith College. He is also a translator, specializing in the 17th century, the French comedies of Molière and the plays of Jean Racine.

On June 20, 1942 Richard Wilbur married in New York City Mary Charlotte Hayes Ward. Of their four children, Ellen, Christopher, Nathan and Aaron went forth.
