Richard Williams (musician)

Richard Gene Williams ( born May 4, 1931 in Galveston, Texas; † 5 November 1985) was an American jazz trumpeter.

Williams first played tenor saxophone, joined as a teenager but the trumpet. He received his basic musical education at Wiley College. After graduating in 1951 he served in the U.S. Air Force. In 1956, he played for three years with Lionel Hampton, with whom he was on tour in Europe. He then settled in New York City, where in 1961 he opened the Manhattan School of Music, a master's degree. During this time he played with Charles Mingus. In 1960 he recorded for Candid his only album as a leader, New Horn in Town. During the next years he played on Broadway, in the USA Orchestra with Max Roach, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, Booker Ervin, Yusef Lateef and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra. In the early 1970s he lived in Europe, where he led a quartet. In addition, worked on Gil Evans'Album Svengali. Later he led a quintet together with Harold Vick. Then he performed with the Mingus Dynasty
