Richerenches

Richerenches is a commune with 696 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Vaucluse department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Richerenches located in the north of the department of Vaucluse, in an enclave that is surrounded by the territory of the Drome region. In Vaucluse with the community Visan in the southeast, the cantonal capital Valréas in the Northeast and Grillon is adjacent to the north. Neighboring communities in Drôme colon cell in the northwest, Montsegur -sur -Lauzon in the west and La Baume- de-Transit in the southwest.

The most important river through the village is the 23 km long Coronne. They flow on an east-west axis, south of the village over and drained as inflow of Lez in the Rhône.

History

In 1136 the Templars were assigned to a piece of heath and moor land as a donation. On this they built a protected by a surrounding wall to come. The development of land caused a rapid occupation of the site, which then fell to the Order of Malta and the Catholic Church. 1335 the village was ravaged by mercenary troops, and remained until the end of the 15th century left. A decree of 1502 provided for the re-colonization by new families, it came to the restoration of the church and rebuild the village wall.

Richerenches is a small wealthy wine-growing. The place is known especially for its truffle market, which takes place every Saturday during the season between November and March. In addition, every third Sunday of January is a traditional " truffle - worship" held: the truffle farmers give as a donation their best truffles in a basket, which will then be offered after service for auction. The proceeds will go to the parish priest.

The historic village center is enclosed by a square wall, dating from the time of the Templars and was enlarged during the rebuilding of the town in the 16th century. It is flanked at each corner by a circular tower. The only pass gate is located to the west and is surmounted by a clock tower from the 18th century. In the wall of beautiful old houses and the church are built from the original apse is preserved from the 12th century. The bell tower and the facade dates from the 18th century.

North of the village wall are the remains of the earliest villages founded in Provence Templar. At the Commandery heard a barn from the 13th century, whose input is surmounted by a semicircular arch of stone. The arch is supported by massive retaining walls and has a recessed hole murder. Adjoining the building is a former notary mansion from the 18th century. The Commandery and the notary house are classified as a monument historique since 28 December 1984.
