Richie Ashburn

Don Richard " Richie" Ashburn ( born March 19, 1927 in Tilden, Nebraska; † 9 September 1997 in New York City, New York) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball. His nickname was Whitey or Put Put.

Biography

Richie Ashburn began his career as an outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies on April 20, 1948 in the National League. Twelve of his fifteen seasons he spent with the Phillies. In his first year he was elected to the All Star, to be followed by four other participants. Twice he won in his career, the title of best batsman. 86 % of his base hits were singles, so he was mostly used as the first player in shock cycle, as it very often reached the bases. In 1950 he won with the Phillies the title in the National League in the World Series they were subject to the New York Yankees. After his time in Philadelphia, he was still playing for the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets in their first season.

After his time as a player he began in 1963 as a radio and television commentator for the Phillies. In 1995 he was elected by the Veterans Committee in the Baseball Hall of Fame. After a transfer of a game the Phillies against the Mets, he died on September 9, 1997 at the age of 70 of a heart attack while sleeping.
