Richmond County (North Carolina)

Richmond County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. In 2000, the County had 46 564 inhabitants and a population density of 38 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rockingham, which was named after the Marquis of rockinham.

Geography

The County is located in southern North Carolina, adjacent to South Carolina and has an area of 1242 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Moore County, Scotland County and Anson County.

Richmond County is divided into seven townships: Beaverdam, blackjack, Marks Creek, Mineral Springs, Rockingham, Steele and Wolf Pit.

History

Richmond County was formed in 1779 from parts of Anson County. It was named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond.

According to the census of 2000, there were 46 564 people in Richmond County.
