Richmond Kickers

The Richmond Kickers are an American football team from Richmond, Virginia. The Kickers were founded in 1993 and since 2011 playing in the USL Professional Division, the third- highest league in the league system of the United States.

The home games are played at City Stadium. Current coach Leigh Cowlishaw is, who has been active since its foundation at the Richmond Kickers and supervised the team as head coach since 2001.

The franchise has in addition to the professional team, two amateur teams. Richmond Kickers Future play in the USL Premier Development League and the Richmond Kickers Destiny play in the Women's Football League W-League.

History

The Kickers were founded in 1993 and carried their first two seasons in the United States Interregional Soccer League from.

In 1995, the team reached one of its greatest successes, winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Kickers were victorious in the final against the El Paso Patriots 4-2 on penalties. In the same year the final of the play-offs in the USISL Premier League could be won.

In October 2005, the owner of the Richmond Kickers announced by USL First Division in the Second Division to change. This allowed the franchise to cut costs and maintain the operation of gambling.

Since the 2011 season, the team plays in the American Division of the USL Professional Division.

Stadium

Since 2003 every home game for the Kickers will be held at the City Stadium in Richmond. The 22,000 capacity stadium is located in the Carytown district near the Virginia State Route 195 Between 1983 and 2010, the Stadium University of Richmond Stadium was called.

The City Stadium was built in 1929 and served the University of Richmond until 2009 as a venue for their sweeps in American Football. In addition to the Kickers and the Richmond Kickers Destiny play their home games from here.
