Triricinolein is the triglyceride of ricinoleic acid and with a content of 80-85% of the main component of castor oil, which from the seeds of the tree ( Ricinus communis) is obtained. The specificity of this vegetable oil is based on ricinoleic acid, which is an unsaturated fatty acid having a hydroxy group.

Triricinolein is an important starting material for preparations in the field of cosmetics with regreasing and supple -giving effect to the skin and hair as well as for the manufacture of technical products.

The extraction is carried out exclusively from the natural product. However triricinolein can not be separated as a pure substance directly from castor oil in an economical manner. It is therefore an indirect way selected by hydrolysis of the triglycerides of ricinoleic acid is castor oil is separated and purified. This can in turn be esterified with glycerin to chemically pure mono-, di-and triricinolein. In the food industry it is used as a highly effective emulsifier polyglycerol polyricinoleate ( PGPR, food additive E 476 ) as a rheological aid in chocolate production. PGPR can be regarded as " polycondensated " triricinolein.
