Rick Hillier

General Richard J. Hillier (* 1955 in Campbellton, Newfoundland) was the chief of the Canadian General Staff and thus the highest-ranking soldier in Canada. He was replaced on 1 July 2008 by Walter Natynczyk.

Life

After studying at the University of Newfoundland and training as a tank officer, he joined his first regiment, the Princess Louise's Hussars in Petawawa, Ontario. He was subsequently transferred to the Royal Canadian Dragoons. With this association, of which he later also took over the command, he also served in Germany.

In the course of his career, General Hillier commanded troops of tensile strength to multi-national organizations in Canada, Europe, Asia and the United States.

In 2000, he took over command of the Multinational Division " West " in the NATO-led Stabilization Force SFOR in Bosnia - Herzegovina.

In 2003 he was commander of the Canadian Forces and shortly afterwards commander of the ISAF forces in Afghanistan.

Since February 4, 2005 General Hillier is Head of the Canadian General Staff.

He is married and has two sons.
