Rick Wamsley

Richard James Wamsley ( born May 25, 1959 in Simcoe, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender and coach, who played from 1980 to 1993 for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.

Career

During his youth, he played with the St. Catharines and Hamilton Fincups Fincups together with Al Jensen before he transferred within the Ontario Hockey Association to the Brantford Alexanders in which Mike Bullard played. In the NHL Entry Draft in 1979, he was selected in the third round at 58th overall position of the Montreal Canadiens.

At the end of his second season with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs of the American Hockey League Wamsley was appointed to the NHL squad the Canadiens. In the following season 1981/82 he won against Denis Herron and Richard Sevigny and played most games as Montreal's goalkeeper. After two more seasons with the Canadiens, he was given a Grand Bargain shop at the St. Louis Blues. With him three draft picks were assigned to the Blues, with which the Blues chose among others Tony Hrkac. In return, the Canadiens received two draft rights, which they used to select for Shayne Corson and Stephane Richer with two players who started a great career in Montreal.

In the blues, he shared for four years, the place in goal with Greg Millen. At the end of the season 1987/88 he was again part of a large exchange business. Together with Rob Ramage gave the Blues him to the Calgary Flames off to undertake with their future star Brett Hull. In Calgary, he was number two behind Mike Vernon. With the Flames Wamsley won the 1989 Stanley Cup. By the end of 1991, he remained with the Flames.

Even with his third change he was, as at other times before, involved in a large transaction. Along with Doug Gilmour, Jamie Macoun, Kent Manderville and Ric Nattress, he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, for the five players sent to Calgary. In Toronto, he was rarely used. After his final season in 1992/93 he became an assistant coach with the Leafs. From 2001 he worked for the Columbus Blue Jackets as a goalkeeper coach. 2006 returned the Canadians as assistant coach to the Blues back to St. Louis.

In July 2010 he was engaged by the Ottawa Senators as a goalkeeper coach.
