The Riddarfjaerden is the easternmost bay of Mälaren and belongs entirely to the urban area of ​​Stockholm. Fjärd, fjord and funding are different types of bays glacial origin.

The Riddarfjaerden extends in an east-west direction and is bounded to the west by the district of Marienberg and the bridge Västerbron, and the former prison island Långholmen, on the north by the Kungsholmen district and the road Norr Mälarstrand, in the east of the islands Riddarholmen and Gamla Stan, as well as in south of the district of Södermalm and the road Söder Mälarstrand.

The Riddarfjaerden is about 2,700 meters long and about 400 meters wide, the beach line is 6400 meters and the greatest depth is about 23 meters.

To the Riddarfjaerden there are some interesting buildings. The most famous is the Stockholm city hall in the northeastern part of the Riddarfjaerden. In the west spans of Stockholm 's tallest bridge, the Västerbron, the bay. In the east there are the locks and the traffic junction Slussen and Gamla Stan. In Slussen the freshwater of Lake Mälaren meets the salt water of the Baltic Sea. The water is so clean that you can swim in the middle of the city, to the bathrooms are in Smedsudden and Långholmen available. Since 1976, takes place annually the Riddarfjärds swimming between Smedsudden and the stadshuset. There are currently (2007 ) a proposal by the architect Thomas Sandell, to build a floating Badehotell right in Riddarfjaerden.
