The Rideau River (French Rivière Rideau ) is a river in Southern Ontario, which its source north of Upper Rideau Lake is located and which opens at Rideau Falls in the Ottawa River.

Its length is 146 km. The catchment area covers 3800 km ². The average discharge is 35 m³ / s

The River was given ( French word for " curtain " ) because of the view of a waterfall, the name Rideau.

The Rideau Canal runs from the City of Ottawa to Kingston on Lake Ontario. It was created by the joining of the two rivers Rideau River and the Cataraqui River. The Rideau River branches at Hog's Back Falls in Ottawa from the canal from.

At the beginning of spring parts of the ice are annually blasted away on the river between Billings Bridge and Rideau Falls with explosives in order to reduce the risk of flooding in the lower reaches of the river.
