Riedern

Riedern is a former municipality in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland.

The village was merged as part of the Glarus municipality reform on 1 January 2011 with the communities Ennenda, Glarus and Netstal the new municipality of Glarus.

Geography

Riedern was in area the smallest municipality in the canton. The district is located at the foot of the Klöntal where the Klöntalersee is.

History

Riedern broke up politically in 1630 from the neighboring village of Glarus. The Evangelical Reformed and Roman Catholic parish and the school community is Riedern but to date together with Glarus.

On October 2, 1799 Russian Field Marshal Suvorov made ​​his army during the Second Coalition War before the retreat across the Panixerpass here two days rest.

Personalities

  • Valeria Spälty: The silver medal winner at the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 is resident since their birth in 1983 in Riedern. There she attended primary school before she attended the secondary school and then high school in Glarus. After the Olympics it a road was renamed in honor in the village center and is now called Valeria Spälty Street.
