Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park

The Rieserferner Ahrn is a Regional Park in South Tyrol, Italy. It is located in the extreme north -east of South Tyrol. The total area of ​​approximately 31,500 hectares of natural park was founded in 1988 consists of the Rieserfernergruppe and Durreck Range and parts of the Venedigergruppe and the Zillertal Alps.

The largest valleys within the nature park are the Reintal and Knuttental. The park is bounded by the Ahrntal that Tures valley, the Valle basin and the Antholz Valley. East of the park is bordered by the direct neighborhood of Austria. It connects directly to the National Park Hohe Tauern.

From a geological point of view of Rieserferner Ahrn is particularly interesting, since the African and European continental plates meet. Through the clash of the two continents of the Alps were folded in front of millions of years. Here, here pushed the African plate over the European. Over time, however, were removed by erosion, parts of the African plate again, so that the deeper strata of the European continent again came to the fore. This is called the so-called Tauern window.

The Rieserferner Ahrn is the largest natural park in South Tyrol. Its name comes from the largest glacier in the park, the Vedrette ( north flank of the Hochgall ), " Further " ( related to firn ) is a regional designation for Glacier.
