Riex

Riex was until July 1, 2011, a municipality in the district of Lavaux-Oron in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. They merged with Cully, Epesses, Grandvaux and Villette (Lavaux ) for new political community Bourg -en -Lavaux.

Geography

Riex is located on 443 m above sea level. M., 9 km east-southeast of the canton capital Lausanne ( straight line ). The wine village extends on a small Verebnungsfläche middle of the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Lavaux, on the southern slopes of Mont de Gourze a scenic location about 70 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​1.4 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Lavaux on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva. Riex himself has no lake access. The communal land extends as a narrow strip from the foot of the vineyards north across the slope of Riex to the Mont de Gourze, on 925 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Riex is achieved. About the Mont de Gourze, just 2 km north of the shore of Lake Geneva, the watershed between the basins of the Rhine and Rhone runs. The western boundary of the municipality is the Champaflon ( Dorfbach Riex ); in the east the area extends partly to the Rio d' Enfer. From the municipality surface 1997 13 % came from settlements, 10 % of forest and shrubs, 76 % to agriculture and slightly less than 1% was unproductive land.

To Riex include several individual farms on the heights of Mont de Gourze. Neighboring communities of Riex are Cully, Forel ( Lavaux) and Epesses.

Population

With 269 inhabitants ( 31 December 2010) Riex was one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 86.3 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 7.0 % and 2.3 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Riex amounted in 1900 to 349 inhabitants. After a slight decrease at the beginning of the 20th century, the population has remained stable since 1960.

Economy

Riex was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the wine has the best sun-drenched slopes of the Lavaux ( about 42 ha) an important place in the economic structure of the population. In Riex quality wines from the appellations Epesses, Villette, Dézaley and calamine are generated. On the plateaus dominate agriculture and animal husbandry. More jobs are in the local small businesses and especially in the services available ( wine cellar and actions ). In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Lausanne and in the Vevey-Montreux region.

Traffic

Although Riex located off the main roads, but traffic is still technically well developed. By Riex performs a connecting road from Cully to Chexbres. The nearest motorway junction on the A9 opened in 1974 (Lausanne -Sion ), which crosses the former municipality, is located at Chexbres, around 4 km from the village. By Postbus course, which runs from Cully via Chexbres to Puidoux- Chexbres station, Riex is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1053 under the name Rualdo. Later, the names Ruais ( 1226 ), Ruas ( 1238 ), Ruex ( 1246) then Riex and still in 1906 the spelling of Riez was used appeared.

Riex belonged since 1246 to the Bishop of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne. After the collapse of the ancien régime Riex belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Lavaux.

Riex was always dependent on Villette. It was not until 1824, when the larger municipality was divided Villette, Riex gained the status of an independent political community. The first project on the merger of five previously independent municipalities Cully, Epesses, Riex, Grandvaux and Villette (Lavaux ) failed initially in a vote on 27 February 2005 on the resistance of the population of Grandvaux.

Since 1 July 2011, this merger is consummated, however. The new political community now operates under the name Bourg -en -Lavaux.

Attractions

Thanks to the Law on the Protection of the Lavaux Riex has with old buildings, surrounded by vineyards, keep its original shape as a compact wine village. Nestled in the village is the chapel of Saint- Théodule, which dates back to the 15th century in the nucleus and was later changed several times. In the village the Maison Blanche (1790), the Maison de Commune (1814 ) and the Maison Henchoz (1805 ) and five beautiful fountains are emphasized. A beautiful panoramic view of the Lake Geneva area, the Alps and the Jura offers from the observation tower Tour de Gourze on the 925 m high Mont de Gourze. The Tour de Gourze was probably built in the 11th century as an observation post.
