Riga Castle

The Riga Castle is located in the Latvian capital Riga.

With the construction of the castle as a fortress for the Livonian Order, was started in 1330 after the citizens of Riga had the original seat of the Order, the White stone castle in the center of the city, destroyed. The Order forced the new building at the north end of downtown.

After the downfall of the Order state the building was used by the respective rulers of the city. The comprehensive restoration was done in the 18th and 19th century, when rebuilt the castle for the provincial government in Riga. 1938 resided for the first time, the Latvian President in the castle. During the Soviet reign, the building " Pioneer Palace " was. After the independence of Latvia Riga Castle is once again the seat of the President of Latvia. The building was heavily damaged by fire on 20 June 2013.
