Riga Central Market

The Central Market Riga ( lett: Rigas Centraltirgus ) is the largest food market in Latvia. He was regarded in the 1930s as the largest and most modern market in Europe.

History

Already in 1910 a branch was planned from the central station of the railroad in the direction of Riga City Canal, on which there were at that time the " red store" with a grocery market.

After the First World War, the hygienic conditions should be improved profoundly on the food market. The shore along the canal and the Daugava ( Western Dvina German ), and the market area had suffered substantial damage during the First World War. With the establishment of the Central Market, the area should be brought back in order.

After December 28, 1922, the Riga City Council had made ​​the decision to rebuild the market, the two airship hangars from the airship port Wainoden in Courland ( Latvian Kurzeme ) were purchased by the government. For constructive reasons and because of hygienic requirements in this case only the upper parts of the halls were used.

Construction began in June 1924 with the removal of the " red store". In the course of construction to various modifications of the original project were. Therefore, the works were interrupted in 1926 and until 1928 continued. On November 2, 1930, the food market could then be passed with a church service.

Since 1995, the market is listed as 100 percent of the Riga City Council AG. The Central Market employs 253 employees and has a total area of ​​72,300 m².

Specifications

In total from the two airship hangars, each of which originally had a length of 240 m, built five market halls. A larger in a north-easterly direction with a length of about 140 meters and an area of ​​5,000 m² for the wholesale and processing meat, as well as 4 smaller halls in a south-southeast direction with a length of about 70 meters and about 2,500 m² for meat products, milk and meat products, bread, fruit and vegetables as well as poultry and fish.

Meanwhile, the entire surface of the central market is 5.7 ha, of which 1.6 ha are covered. The construction of the market cost the city at that time over 5,000,000 lats.

Sales development

After the opening in 1930 of the Central Market for the most hub for all kinds of food was the farmers sold their products in the new, bright and clean market cheaper than in comparable stores. In 1931, goods were a total of 41,000 m² of space sold with an annual turnover of about 750,000 lats

With the abolition of the wholesale trade and the nationalization of agriculture during the part of the Soviet Union, however, prices rose and were higher than in the stores. Farmers were allowed to sell their own products only outside the halls.

Since the restoration of Latvia's independence, there is now also back on free trade and the market offers all the products in the halls and on the open spaces again at lower prices to, as in the corresponding stores.

In 2001, products were sold to a total area of ​​72,300 sqm for a total of 4.6 million lats.
