Rijckloff van Goens

Rijcklof Volckerts van Goens (also Rijckloff ) (* June 24, 1619 in Rees, † November 14, 1682 in Amsterdam) was Governor of Ceylon from 1659 to 1672 and from 1678 to 1681 Governor General of the East Indies. Van Goens, mostly known as an excellent soldier, also sent a writer to the blind Georg Eberhard Rumphius, so that he could finish his history of Ambon and botanical studies.

Biography

Rijcklof van Goens was East Frisian origin. The family probably originated from Gödens. His father Volckert Boukes (1572-1629) served in the Dutch army and was stationed in Rees at Cleves; his mother Hillegonde Jacobsdr came from Franeker. His uncle, who was born about 1580 in Emden, was already in 1624 in the East Indies and had convinced his father to go into the service of the VOC room in Amsterdam. Van Goens was appointed and accompanied by his wife and children as commander of a company of soldiers left the Van Goens Texel in October 1628 with the ship Buren and arrived in Batavia on July 10, 1629 at. His parents died within a year and Rijklof was probably educated by his uncle, a later aldermen in Batavia.
