Rijksakademie

The Rijksakademie van Beeldende kunsten ( German: Imperial Academy of Fine Arts) is an art school founded, Netherlands, 1870. It promotes visual artists and artists through a two-year Academy stay in Amsterdam.

History

The Rijksakademie van Beeldende wants kunsten - in their own words - to be a place to come together to the philosophers, scientists and artists to check knowledge and ideas and to share. It was in 1870 by King William III. founded in order to give in the Netherlands forming by state cultural funding artists a training opportunity. Early pupils were George Hendrik Breitner, Isaac Israels and Willem Witsen, who developed the Amsterdam Impressionism and 1882 the Circle of Friends " St. Lucas ' ( the patron saint of painters ) founded to promote the artistic disciplines at the Academy and the collegial relationships among students.

The Academy Today

1992 pulled the state academy in a former cavalry barracks on the Sarphatistraat which has been completely refurbished for the current function. In November 1999 it became an independent institution that is financed by a fund of the Ministry of Education and private sponsors. The Institute also offers workshops with specialized professionals and a library with a focus on contemporary art and art history. Invited artists and artists will be offered a stipend and a studio. Every year about twenty fellows are invited. The number of applicants was in recent years in 1200. The artists come from all over the world. Less than half come from the Netherlands. Famous artists and important art critics will be invited to regular visit to the studios of the residents.

Prix ​​de Rome

The Academy annually awards a Dutch Prix de Rome to eligible artists and architects. It is endowed with € 45,000 for the first, with € 20,000 for the second and € 10,000 for other prize winners.
