Rijnsburg is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland with over 14,500 inhabitants.

History

On the grounds of Rijnsburg there was in the sixth century a Friesendorf how archaeological finds show. Mentioned in documents it was in a church font to 750 with the words Rudolf Home dat nu Rinasburg wordt genoemd ( " Rudolf Home Rinasburg is now called ). On August 10, 975 Count Dirk II won at Rinasburg a struggle against the West Frisians and donated in gratitude the chapel St. Lawrence. Near this chapel founded in the early 12th century Petronilla of Holland a convent for noble nuns. in 1570, the monastery was destroyed, only the south tower has been preserved. Rijnsburg on 1 January 2006 was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Katwijk.

Attractions

  • Spinoza House: From 1661 to 1663 the Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza lived in Rijnsburg. The house was purchased in 1897 by the community and has since served the club Spinoza eV as home and museum.
