RIKEN MDGRAPE-3

MDGRAPE -3, usually made by the research institute RIKEN in Japan, supercomputers. The system was designed specifically for molecular dynamics simulations, more precisely for the calculation of protein structures.

MDGRAPE - 3 consists of 201 units, each with 24 MDGRAPE- 3 chips ( total of 4824 ) and additional dual-core Intel Xeon processors (codenamed " Dempsey " ), which serve as host machines.

In June 2006, RIKEN announced the completion of the system, which can perform one quadrillion floating point operations per second (1 petaflop / s). This is comparable to the speed of the IBM Roadrunner, who tops the TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in November 2008. Since MDGRAPE -3 no system for general calculations, but are processed specific tasks, he could not qualify for the TOP500 list because of the incompatibility with LINPACK. Therefore, the system is often referred to as an example of the negative aspects LINPACKs.
