Rings of Saturn#Cassini Division

The Cassini division called the largest gap within the ring system of the planet Saturn.

It is caused by the moon Mimas, is about 4,800 km wide and separates the two most striking rings of Saturn, the A ring and the B ring. It still occur voids between the individual rings of Saturn, of which the Cassini division is the largest. The attraction forces of Saturn's moons, the particles are drawn from the system. However, the Cassini division is not empty space, but contains darker material, which is why they are " empty " or materielos appear in captured images from space probes.

The Cassini division is named after the French astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini, who discovered it in 1675.

The Cassini spacecraft discovered when taking a shot during an occultation of the Sun by Saturn (from the perspective of the probe, 15 September 2006), an unknown ring.
