Ringsted is a city on Zealand in Denmark and a major transportation hub. Here the railway line branches off from Rodby of the railway line Copenhagen - Fredericia, also run on the city several important roads. Ringsted is the administrative seat of the municipality of Ringsted in Zealand and counts as a place 21 423 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The municipality is 295.5 km ² in size Ringsted and counts 33 217 inhabitants (1 January 2013).

History

Ringsted is one of the oldest urban settlements in Denmark. In the Middle Ages the town was to some extent capital of Zealand, as there was the country Thing here. Even if the law had not Seeländische in Jutland still in Skåne validity, Ringsted was intermittent but administrative center for the whole of Denmark.

On January 7, 1131 Duke Knud Lavard, was murdered in the nearby Haraldsted by his cousin Magnus, son of the former king Niels. He was buried in the church Ringsteder that developed after his canonization in 1170 into a major place of pilgrimage.

After the monarchy, the cathedral city of Roskilde and Copenhagen later made ​​it her main center, Ringsted remained a provincial town, despite its central location on the island.

Structures

Worth seeing is the Romanesque- Gothic St. Bendts Church from the 12th century with valuable frescoes, in which, as in the cathedral of Roskilde royal tombs are housed. It is one of the oldest brick buildings in Denmark.

In Ringsted there was the Fantasy World amusement park, which was bought in 2006 by BonBon-Land and moved to Holme- Olstrup.
