The Rio Grande County is a county located in the state of Colorado of the United States with 12,413 inhabitants. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Del Norte.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,413 people in the county. There were 4,701 households and 3,417 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 73.93 percent White, 0.35 percent African American, 1.26 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 21.45 percent from other races groups; 2.76 percent were descended from two or more races. 41.67 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,701 households out of which 35.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers. 27.3 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent of all households and 10.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.08.
