Action

A Texan fort in 1879. Lt.. Col. Yorke lives here separated from his wife. The mere military problems are immense due to the continuous raids of the Apaches, as General Sheridan not allowed to pursue the Indians across the Rio Grande to Mexico. Then also Yorke son Jefferson, whom he has not seen 15 years, treated as a recruit in the fort. The lieutenant colonel treated his son like any other recruits; there are no benefits for him. However, this is Jefferson also very pretty.

During his training meets Kathleen Yorke, wife and mother, a Fort. The mother wants to bring home her son, the son wants to show what it can do, the father wants to teach his son something.

For all other issues, also a sheriff who wants to arrest the soldiers Tyree joined. Meanwhile, the Apaches have stepped up and come upon the fort again. Sheridan issued the order to cross the border, a department under Jefferson Yorke to bring women and children to safety. The Apaches raided Jefferson's Department, including women and children. Lieutenant Colonel Yorke, the Apaches defeated only with great difficulty.

Criticism

"Compared to the previous parts of John Ford's cavalry trilogy acts " Rio Grande " less consistent and homogeneous. In addition to the soothing optimism irritated especially the folkloric element: the country music group " Sons of the Pioneers " has several unmotivated performances ".

Background

  • Confusion caused occasionally, that the main character portrayed by John Wayne has the same name ( Yorke ) as the mimed by the same character in To the last man ( York). Since the two movie figures have evidently nothing to do with each other, have different biographies, Fagen saw in the fact that the film character in Rio Grande was even donated a final " e", one of the typical John Ford teasing.
  • During the filming of two stuntmen who drowned at the scene of the river crossing died.
  • The sound effect of the Pony Stampede comes from the movie The Devil captain.
  • Ford had for the approval of the winner, also with Wayne and O'Hara in the lead roles, first to make this film in order to compensate from the studio feared losses.
  • In Italy, the film was released under the title of Rio Bravo. The title refers to the Mexican name of the river as the Rio Bravo ( del Norte). Not to be confused with the Westerns of Howard Hawks, also with John Wayne in the lead role.
