Rio Grande is a Brazilian city with approximately 200,000 residents in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The city, founded in 1737, is the oldest of the state and was 1835-1845 as its capital. The city is located between Santa Vitória do Palmar in the south and in the north Pelotas.

History

During the Revolution Farrapen the President Antônio Rodrigues Fernandes Braga was forced from the rebels to flee from the capital Porto Alegre to Rio Grande.

Economy and Harbour
