Rio Maior is a municipality and city in Portugal. The community numbered 21,231 on 30 June 2011 inhabitants, of whom 12,000 live within the city.

History

Was first documented in Rio Maior in 1177 as a village in the district of Santarém. 1619 here a royal hostel was opened. The 1789 opened royal road from Lisbon to Coimbra also happened Rio Maior. In Miguelistenkrieg 1834 King Michael I stayed in the hostel. In 1836, Rio Maior seat of its own circle.

After the first attempts in 1890 here was the coal mining, as part of the efforts of the country in the First World War, resumed and intensified. On August 14, 1985, the former town ( Vila ) Rio Maior to the city ( Cidade ) was charged.
