Riolo Terme
Riolo Terme ( riol on Romagnol ) is a spa town with 5811 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Ravenna in the Italian region Emilia -Romagna. It is located 45 km southeast of Bologna and 48 km southwest of Ravenna.
Geography
Riolo Terme is located in the hills at the edge of the Apennines Faentino above the Po valley in the Senio. It is a member of the Comunità Montana dell'Appennino Faentino.
It borders the following municipalities: Borgo Tossignano, Brisighella, Casola Valsenio, Castel Bolognese, Faenza and Imola.
The main attraction of the city are the thermal baths which have been known since antiquity.
The name Riolo derives from a long dry creek, the Rio Doccia. By 1914 the place was therefore Riolo secco ( dry creek ). Until 1957 was the name of the community Riolo Bagni ( Bad Riolo ).
History
In ancient Roman times the area was populated with numerous villas and estates. In the 9th century, Benedictine monks founded the Abbey of San Petro in Sala. 1336 to Riolo under the protection of Bologna, who built a castle, which was an important bulwark in the sequence. In 1500 it was conquered by Cesare Borgia in the Papal States, and incorporated in 1504 in the reign of Imola. 1859 came to the Kingdom of Italy.
