The Ripple skirt was an underwater mountain in the Discovery Passage between Vancouver Iceland and the Canadian mainland with two peaks, which is only about three meters were under the water surface. At this point of danger fell 119 boats and ships, while 114 people were killed.

After long discussions and initial experiments since the year 1943, a tunnel was driven under the seabed up to the mountain peaks from 1955 in 27 months. With 1,375 tons of explosives was blown up on the bottleneck April 5, 1958 at 9:31 clock. The blast was broadcast on television. It was the first live television program that was seen in all of Canada.

This was one of the largest conventional detonations in history, with the 370,000 t of rock and 320,000 tonnes of water was moved. Since then, the now 14 m deep throat is no longer a danger to shipping.
