Rittersdorf, Rhineland-Palatinate

Knight village municipality in the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Bitburg -Land. Knight village is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

The place is located in the South Eifel, about 4 km north of Bitburg in Nimstal. The nearest major town is Trier ( 30 km).

History

Knight village was first mentioned in the year 962, when Emperor Otto I the Abbey of St. Maximin their possessions confirmed. At that time the place " Ratheresdorf " was called. Over time, the name Knight village has changed.

From 1956 to 1961 camped near the place in bunkered silos for the U.S. armed forces cruise missiles of the type TM -61 Matador.

Parish council

The local council in Knight village consists of 16 council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 of personalized proportional representation, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Structures

The Knights village castle was as a moated castle at the Nims at Thoroughfare Trier - first mentioned in Cologne in 1263 as a possession of the imperial abbey of St. Maximin - Bitburg - Prüm. 1290 was the 26 m high keep. The castle now houses a restaurant and the registrar's office of the municipality Bitburg -Land.
