Riva Valdobbia
Riva Valdobbia ( Walser German Rifu, Piedmontese la Riva ) is a municipality with 251 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Vercelli (VC ), Region Piedmont.
Geography
The neighboring municipalities are Alagna, Campertogno Gressoney, Mollia, Rassa and Rima San Giuseppe. The patron saint of the place is the Archangel Michael.
The place is 95 km from the provincial capital Vercelli at an altitude of 1112 m above sea level in Valsesiatal. The municipality covers an area of 61.69 km ².
History
Originally the site was called Petrae Gemellae ( German: twin stones, Italian Pietre Gemelle, Walser German Presmell ), the reason are two large boulders that can still be seen on the outskirts. The first mention of the town dates back to the year 1217. Later, the area was colonized by the Walser people who mixed with the previous inhabitants of the region.
Attractions
In the district of Raber Nardo is a museum for the Walser culture. Worth seeing is the village church to the Archangel Michael.
