Rivas (Nicaragua)

Rivas is the capital of the administrative district of Rivas in southern Nicaragua on the border with Costa Rica. The city has 26 046 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005).

Geography

Rivas is located on the Panamerican Highway, about four kilometers away from the western shores of Lake Nicaragua, between the border with Costa Rica at Peñas Blancas in the south ( 35 km) and the capital of Managua to the north ( 100 km) and acts as an important hub on the one hand to the coastal San Juan del Sur on the Pacific Ocean and on the other hand, the offshoot of the ferry in San Jorge to Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. Center of town is the Parque Central with the Church of San Pedro. The large market west of it also serves as a bus station, go from where the yellow buses in all directions of the region as well as to Costa Rica or Managua.

Policy

Mayor of the City and the municipality of Rivas is since the elections on 9 November 2008, the rancher, Wilfredo López Hernández from the FSLN. He replaces the radio host José René Martinez Somoza of the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC ), which in 2004 was mayor since 7 November. Wilfredo Lopez is the first Sandinista mayor in the history of the city.
