River Cherwell

The Cherwell [ t͡ʃɑ wɛɫ ː ] is a river that flows through the core areas of England. It rises in the Ironstone Hills at Hellidon, three kilometers west of Charwelton near Daventry.

Course

He is one of the major tributaries of the River Thames. The general direction of flow of the river is from north to south. The distance from the source to its confluence with the River Thames in Oxford is about 65 km due. It flows through Northamptonshire for approximately 15 km before it flows to the estuary through the Oxfordshire countryside. Between Cropredy and Thrupp the Cherwell forms since the late 18th century, a section of the Oxford Canal. This largely artificial waterway connecting the River Thames with the Coventry Canal.

Headwaters

Just north of the source is the Helidon Hill at the same time is a watershed. On the south side the water feeds the Cherwell, and thus the Thames, which flows into the North Sea; on the north side feeds the water to Leam, which flows into the River Avon and the River Severn in the Bristol Channel, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean flows.
