The Dee at Banchory

The Dee (Gaelic: Uisge DÃ ¨ ) is a river in north-east Scotland. It rises on the plateau of the third highest Scottish mountain, the Braeriach in the Cairngorm Mountains and ends after 140 km at Aberdeen in the North Sea. The source height of about 1220 m is considered the highest of all the major rivers in the British Isles. The river forms several waterfalls (including the Falls of Dee just behind the source and the rapids Linn of Dee near the small village Inverey ) and is only navigable for a short distance in the port of Aberdeen. Here, the river is widened and deepened the harbor entrance, as it is used as one of three docks. West of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge can drive already no larger ships or boats.

The upper part of the valley of the Dee is also referred to as " Royal Deeside ". Balmoral Castle, located between Braemar and Ballater is since the time of Queen Victoria's Scottish summer residence of the British Royal Family.
