River Irwell

The River Irwell is a 63 km long river that flows in the North West of England in the counties of Lancashire and Greater Manchester through the Irwell Valley.

The source of the River Irwell Springs is in Deerplay Moor, about 2.5 km north of the town of Bacup, in the parish Cliviger, Lancashire. The Irwell flows through the inner cities of Manchester and Salford, before flowing into the River Mersey near Irlam.

To make the winding course of the Irwell navigable for ships easier and to create a connection from Irwell and Mersey, Mersey and Irwell was the navigation built in the 18th century, at the end of the 19th century by the larger and still powered Manchester Ship Canal lost its role to connect Manchester with Liverpool and the open sea.

The River Irwell is crossed by the Bridgewater Canal, which by the Barton aqueduct was possible 1761-1891 and has since been realized by the Barton Swing Aqueduct.
