River Orwell

BW

The Orwell is a river in the English county of Suffolk. The overflow (outside the tidal influence ) is also known under the name River Gipping. It widens at Ipswich to an estuary and flows into the North Sea at Felixstowe.

The writer Eric Blair chose his pseudonym, George Orwell, because of his love for the river.

The Orwell is a popular river for sailing. The interest originally referred to the hamlet of Pin Mill ( site of the incident in two children's books by Arthur Ransome: We Did not Mean to go to Sea and Secret Water).
