Rivera is a city in the north of Uruguay.
Geography
Rivera is the capital of the departments Rivera and is located about 400 km ( straight line ) north of the capital, Montevideo. It is a border town between Brazil and Uruguay. Rivera lies at the foot of the mountain range Coxhilia de Santana.
Climate
History
Rivera was officially founded on July 20, 1867. It is considered the homeland and stronghold of Portuñol.
Population
Rivera has 64 485 inhabitants ( as of 2011), of which 30 383 male and 34 102 female, with the sister city of Santana do Livramento about 200,000 total.

Rivera, which has a bus station is connected via the Ruta 5 to the national road network. About 10 kilometers outside of the city is an airport.
Description
Inaugurated in February 1943 Plaza Internacional is one of the key points of the city. He is on both Uruguayan and Brazilian territory and forms an open border between Rivera and Santana do Livramento in Brazil. The road connecting the two cities is called Avenida Sarandi. In this shopping street are shops from different fields and also the so-called free shops. A change in the Brazilian city is possible without identity papers. Since 2006, all border control has been abolished. This is a unique situation in South America dar. Another central point in the city is located in front of the Intendency Municipal Plaza Artigas.

Rivera has 4 secondary schools:

- Liceo Rivera Chico and
- Liceo Zona Este
- Liceo Santa Isabel
Furthermore, there is a " UTU " (technical school) and an institute for teacher education. A cultural hall is available for events.
Sport and Leisure
Rivera has a stadium Estadio Atilio Paiva Olivera with. For sporting and social leisure activities also serves to Golf Club Cuñapirús. About twenty minutes outside Rivera is the recreation area Parque Gran Bretaña.

Medical care is provided by a public hospital and several private conservatories.

Since gambling is illegal in Brazil, lots of visitors coming to the divided city, as there are casinos in the Uruguayan part.
