The Rivne Nuclear Power Plant (Ukrainian Рівненська АЕС, Russian Ровенская АЭС ) is a nuclear power plant in Ukraine. It is located near the city on the River Styx Kusnezowsk in Rivne Oblast. Kusnezowsk leads in the city coat of arms, a nuclear power plant, as the city was built for the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant.

The nuclear power plant consists of two Russian-designed reactors of the type WWER-440/213 and two reactors of the type WWER-1000/320. Operator is the state enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom.

History

The construction of the first nuclear reactor was started on 1 August 1973. The second reactor block was followed on 1 October 1973. On December 31, 1980, the first and on 30 December 1981, the second reactor block was put into operation. The block has one built the first reactor of the 213 version of the model VVER - 440. In the years 1980 and 1986 has started with the construction of the reactor units three and four. The block three went on 21 December 1986.

A decision on the extension of the operation of the first two reactors approved the Ukrainian government on the tenth of December 2010. Overall, the operation for another 20 years was approved, bringing the cut-off is to be expected in 2030 and 2031.

Signed in 1995, the G7 countries, the European Commission and Ukraine a Memorandum of Understanding on the closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In support of the Ukrainian decision of the Ukraine was a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ( EBRD) granted to complete the two each to 80 percent completed nuclear reactors Khmelnitsky 2 and Rivne 4 as a substitute for, the switched off Chernobyl nuclear power plant and retrofit Western safety standards ( " K2/R4 " program). On 7 December 2000 a loan of 215 million U.S. dollars was approved by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In 2000, the European Commission decided to award of a EURATOM loan for the completion of the reactors Khmelnitsky 2 and Rovno 4 in an amount of 585 million U.S. dollars. The granting of the loan, however, was coupled to a decision of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. But as the EBRD criteria were not met for the lending policies of Ukraine, the credit was ultimately not paid. In July 2004, shortly before the start of operation of the two reactors, 42 million U.S. dollars were struck for the modernization and safety improvements by the EBRD. The European Commission presented within the framework of EURATOM additional 83 million U.S. dollars to finance a safety upgrade for the state operator Energoatom available.

The reactor Rivne 4 was synchronized on 10 October 2004 for the first time with the network. The reactor went into commercial operation on April 6, 2006. The block was 4 but already in 2004 1532 hours ( 663 GWh) in 2005 and 6131 hours ( 4742 GWh) in operation.

Disorders

On 14 December 2005, there was a reactor scram in Block 4 The cause was a shutdown of the pump in the Turbine Hall after a short circuit.

In the 10th June 2008, has come to a discharge of about one cubic meter of cooling liquid. There was no radioactivity outside the plant measured. The reactor was shut down for safety reasons. According to the operator, the amount has not exceeded the permissible standard.
