Rizla history

The myth of the invention

The Rizla tradition began in 1532, when the Frenchman Alexandro Rizlette Cramptone de Lacroix had begun to manufacture paper. According to the legend, he was to make a rainy day inspired in the French town of Angoulême his cigarette paper, as he acted with paper for wine bottles and thereby recognized the potential of the paper market.

The breakthrough

In 1660, the Lacroix family began in earnest with the production of cigarette paper. Despite the early success, the family until 76 years later bought their own paper mill, which was financed by Francois Lacroix, who founded in 1736 the Lacroix- Rolling -paper company.

The Lacroix company received in 1796 a large production order. During the French Revolution, Napoleon gave the company the contract to manufacture cigarette paper for the soldiers who had been forced to use book pages to turn their cigarettes.

1860 Lacroix Pierre improved manufacturing method for the Lacroix cigarette paper. 1865, the procedure was changed again and used instead of rice tissue, which the paper gave the name " Rizla "; a combination of the French word for rice " Riz ", " La " and the Cross ( French " croix "), which represented the family. The company was renamed in 1866.

Rizla was so successful, that the Lacroix family had accumulated enough wealth in 1891 to make himself a palace built - like building, the " Chateau Léonide Lacroix " was called. The Lacroix family sold their product across Europe and the United States (as of 1900).
