Røldal

Røldal is a village in the municipality of Odda on the edge of the Hardangervidda in western Norway with about 600 inhabitants.

The main attraction is the Røldal stave church.

History

Røldal was until 1964 an independent municipality in Hordaland. The merger with Odda was made on 1 January 1964 Røldal at that time had 676 inhabitants.

Economy

Main occupation of the population is agriculture. Røldal is known for its goat cheese produced here ( in Norwegian called Geitost ). In the sixties of the 20th century, some power stations were built in the area of Røldal, which ushered in a certain economic recovery. Even today there are still some residents employed in the energy industry. Another industry is tourism. The ski center ( Røldal skisenter ) has four lifts and a chairlift and is considered one of the snowiest ski resorts in Norway.
