Ro, Greece

Ro ( Greek Ρω ( f sg ) ( Rho ) rarely, Agios Georgios ( Άγιος Γεώργιος ( m. sg. ) ), Turkish Karaada, Black Island ') is a small uninhabited Greek island in the Dodecanese prefecture in the island's breathtaking natural community in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Location

The sparsely vegetated rocky island is located about 120 km east of Rhodes, 5 km west of the island Kastellorizo ​​and less than 6 km south of the Turkish coast. With a length of 2.63 km, the maximum width of 1.1 km, the narrowest point measures about 300 m. The highest elevation of 1.476 km ². large island in the western reaches 87 m. Ro has two bays, Frangolimiona ( Φραγκολιμιώνα ) in the south and the small port of Agios Georgios with a chapel in the northwest. In the east, the islet Tragonera connects ( Τραγονέρα ).

History

The island of Ro was never inhabited systematically over a longer period. From ancient sources the name Rogi ( Ρώγη ) or Ropi ( Ρόπη ) have survived. The retrieved wine press dating from the 4th century BC suggests agricultural activity. Since Byzantine times the island served, located due to the upstream position to the Lycian coast along with Strongyli, east of Kastellorizo ​​, as a military observation post of Rhodes. The small fortified observation posts ( πύργο - φρυκτωρία ) was at the highest point and was also used during the rule of the Hospitallers on Rhodes to the Ottoman period. The island is said to have also served Lambros Katsonis from 1788-1792 as a base.

20th century

Until the early 1980s, a Greek resident only lived on the island, the shepherdess Despina Achladioti, the " Lady of Ro " ( Η Κυρά της Ρω ), the day the Greek flag hoisted within sight of the Turkish coast and caught the evening. That made ​​her a famous Greek patriot, as Turkey Ro and the neighboring islands due to its proximity to the Turkish mainland claimed for himself. On the neighboring island Kastellorizo ​​a monument was erected for them.

Today, only a small Greek military base located on Ro, and agriculture is no longer operated on the island. The community Megisti leased the island to its inhabitants for grazing.
