Road Town

Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands. It is located on the main island of Tortola and has about 8,600 inhabitants (as of 2006). Road Town has a commercial port.

History

1648 Road Town is founded on the Road Bay as the capital and administrative center of the Dutch settlers. There was damage to the city again and again by fire, the oldest still standing building, however, is only from the year 1840.

Attractions

The Botanic Gardens in the heart of Road Town impress with their exotic plant abundance. A circular path happens here also an open-air enclosure for tropical birds and artificial waterfalls.

In the deep-sea port and ferry dock of Road Town anchor many large catamarans and yachts that can be chartered for trips to the islands of the Virgins often.

On Main Street Road Town with its shops, bars and pubs as well as some houses found in the colonial style. A highlight here is the Pusser 's Company Store, which is rum to the Royal Navy since 300 years.
