Roads and Maritime Services

Roads and Maritime Services ( RMS short also ) is the Roads and Traffic Authority in New South Wales, Australia. She is responsible for the maintenance, development and operation of the nationwide road network. In addition, it operates the license and approval authorities and monitored ports and waterways.

The Authority was established on 1 November 2011 as a merger of the Roads and Traffic Authority ( RTA short ) and NSW Maritime to life. The planning authority has the authority Transport for New South Wales, founded on the same day transferred.

Road network

Operated by Roads and Maritime Services road network has a total length of 18,028 kilometers, 4269 kilometers included therein which are funded by the National Roads Authority, and 163 km privately financed toll roads. These include 5051 bridges, 22 tunnels and 3751 lights. The remaining 144,750 kilometers in New South Wales are managed by the Local Government Areas.

Car Ferries

As part of the road infrastructure, the RMS also operates several car ferries. They are basically free of charge:

  • Webbs Creek Ferry, on the Hawkesbury River in the village of Wisemans Ferry
  • Wisemans Ferry, on the Hawkesbury River in the village of Wisemans Ferry
  • Wymah Ferry, across the Murray River between New South Wales and Victoria
