Roane County (Tennessee)

Roane County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kingston.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Tennessee and has an area of 1023 square kilometers, of which 88 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Morgan County, Anderson County, Loudon County, McMinn County, Meigs County and Cumberland County.

History

Roane County was formed on November 6, 1801 from parts of Knox County. It was named after Archibald Roane, a veteran of the American War of Independence and later governor of Tennessee.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Roane County 51 910 people in 21,200 households and 15,242 families. The population density was 56 people per square kilometer.
