Roanoke is a city in Denton County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in northeastern Texas on U.S. Highway 377, about 3 km south of the Grapewine Lake and has a total area of 15.6 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The first settlement as Garden Center, which later became the town was founded, began in 1847, when 20 families from Missouri settled here, near the confluence of the Henrietta Creek and the Denton Creek. After several floods the settlement in 1879 to a higher terrain moved about 2 km south and renamed in Garden Valley.

As 1881, the Texas and Pacific Railroad laid its tracks near the residents moved again into the vicinity of the railway station and named their new settlement at Roanoke.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,810 people in 1,106 households and 759 families. The population density was 179.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.43 % White, 1.35 % African American, 1.14 % Native American, 1.07 % Asian, 0.07 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 3.24 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.70% were of mixed descent, and 10.82 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,106 households, 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.3 % were married couples living together. 8.7 % had a female householder with no husband, and 31.3 % were non-families. 26.6 % of all households were single-person households and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size amounted to 3.11.

28.3 % of the population were under 18 years old, 10.2 % from 18 to 24, 38.6 % 25-44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.4% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 98.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 48,107, and the median income for a family $ 58,833. Males have a median income of $ 37,845 versus $ 30,920 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,051. 4.5 % of the population and 2.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 2.1 % have children under the age of 18 and 2.1% of those 65 or older.
