Rob Bottin

Robin R. Bottin ( born April 1, 1959 in Los Angeles, California, USA) is an American specialist in mask effects in the film.

Life and work

As the youngest of five children Bottin grew up in the industrial suburb of El Monte. As a child he was fascinated by horror movies and magazines such as Forrest J Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland. His father was a foreman in a transport and storage company that had specialized on film sets and props. At the age of 7 years, Rob Bottin had a dramatic experience when his father showed him a box with a Frankenstein Mummy and Little Rob lingered for several hours in front of the crate to wait for a movement of the doll.

With 14 Bottin sent several drawings and sketches to the makeup effects artist Rick Baker ( An American Werewolf and Michael Jackson's legendary Thriller video ), which hired him promptly. However, the only major collaboration between the two was John Guillermins King Kong remake of 1976.

1978 began a fruitful collaboration with director Joe Dante, who hired Rob Bottin for his horror B- movie Piranha. Two years later, Bottin created the Ghost Pirates for John Carpenter's horror classic The Fog - The Fog.
