Robbie McEwen (* June 24, 1972 in Brisbane ) is an Australian former racing cyclist.

Career

McEwen was a teenager BMX athletes and has been in the discipline of Australian junior champion. At the age of 18 he moved to road cycling. As an amateur, McEwen won three stages of the International Peace Race in 1994 and the same year a stage of the Tour de l' Avenir. After Australian road champion, he was in 1995, won three stages in the Rapport Toer as well as one - stage victory at the Regio - Tour and the Tour de l' Avenir, 1996, he was the Dutch professional cycling team Rabobank.

His breakthrough came in the 1999 Tour de France with his first stage victory on the final section. In the next few years he became one of the best road sprinters of his generation. He won by his Endschnelligkeit for a total of twelve stages of the Tour de France and the Giro d' Italia. He also won two times the points classification in the Tour de France.

Even with the one-day races McEwen was successful. He was three times Australian road champion and won five times the semi- classic Paris -Brussels. The UCI Road World Championships in 2002 in Zolder he finished second and beaten while in the sprint only by Mario Cipollini.

On 20 May 2012, he played in the Tour of California, his last international race and then finished his career as a professional cyclist. At this time he is the most successful after wins Australian road cyclist of all time. Overall, he was able to celebrate 152 victories.

Despite his official resignation Robbie McEwen denied in his homeland continue to race. He won the 2013 Noosa International Criterium in Australia.

Private

Robbie McEwen lived many years in Belgium and is fluent in Flemish. He now lives with his Belgian wife and their three children back in his native Australia (as of 2013). In December 2011 he published his autobiography, One Way Road: The Autobiography of Three Time Tour de France Green Jersey winner Robbie McEwen in collaboration with Edward Pickering.
