Robert Barnes (martyr)

Robert Barnes (also: Anthony Angelus, Anthonius Amarius, Antony Barnes, * 1495 in King 's Lynn, Norfolk, † 30 July 1540 in London) was an English theologian of the Reformation period and martyrs.

Life

Barnes studied at Cambridge in 1514 with John Bale, 1523 in Leuven, returned to Cambridge where he earned a doctorate in theology and then prior of the Augustinian monastery is. Because of Reformation preaching he was interrogated at Cambridge and has to be in February 1526 in London by Thomas Wolsey and several Bishops of London, Rochester, Bath and St. Asaph responsible for a Häresieverfahren. Then he recanted he escaped the death penalty, but was imprisoned. In 1528, he fled to Antwerp, then to Germany where he lived under the assumed name. So he learned Martin Luther, Justus Jonas the Elder, Christoph Hegendorf and John Aepinus know.

In 1531, he returned at the invitation of Thomas Cromwell to London and was chaplain to the King Henry VIII, the 1534/35 sent him to Germany to get the consent of the Lutherans to his divorce and marriage. He was also invited to Wittenberg, where he was Melanchthon prevent them from traveling to France and to England. In 1539, he was again in Germany go. As a proponent of the marriage of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves, he was indicted after the failure of the connection attacked by Stephen Gardiner because of his doctrine of justification, and arrested without trial as a heretic on July 30, 1540 with two other Protestants ( William Jerome and Thomas Gerrard ) executed by burning. Three other Old Believers Thomas Abel, Richard Fetherstone and Edward Powell were hanged on the same day in Smithfield, London. His creed, with a foreword by Martin Luther, was translated into German and published several times.
