Robert Barry (artist)

Robert Barry ( born March 9, 1936 in New York City, USA) is an American conceptual artist. Robert Barry is one of the protagonists of the American conceptual art.

Life and work

Robert Barry studied at Hunter College of the City University of New York.

Robert Barry began at the beginning of his artistic career to work as a painter. He worked there early to investigate the relationships between surface and space and of positive and negative. He also deals with present and absent forms and the addition of blank forms by the viewer of the work. Since 1967 he has been working with immaterial art works, installations and performance art and with a variety of otherwise invisible media.

He created spatial installations with wires and transparent nylon threads. He led actions with noble gases ( " Inert Gas Series" ), radioactive material ( "Radiation Pieces" ) and worked with acoustic frequencies, noise and speech. For an action Gas cylinders have been used in various settings groups of viewers in the desert.

" Nothing Seems to me the most potent thing in the world. " Barry's work is focused on escaping the known physical limits of the objects and on the different ways to define the invisible space around the objects, rather than on the objects themselves.

Barry used for an action, for example, inaudible radio waves from a transmitter for a prescribed period of time " not as a means of transmitting information, but rather itself as an object " in an exhibition at the Siege Leaves Gallery in New York.

Robert Barry has participated in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department light light / idea and at the Documenta 6 (1977 ) and the Documenta 7 in 1982 with works. He lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.
