Robert Brandom

Robert Boyce Brandom ( born March 13, 1950) is an American philosopher. He is one of the significant philosophers of the present and provided important contributions to the philosophy of language and to understand the logic.

Life

Brandom studied mathematics, then philosophy and the arts. In 1972 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy summa cum laude from Yale University. He received his Ph.D. in 1977 in Princeton (USA) and is since 1981 professor of philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. Robert B. Brandom is married to Barbara turning Born- Brandom, the couple has two sons.

He was a student of Richard Rorty and David Lewis. He is also heavily influenced by Wilfrid Sellars. Brandom 1994 with his book Making it Explicit known that 2000 is published in German under the title Expressive reason. It follows the language pragmatic philosophy direction of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Central to this is the question, " how meaning arises out of use ". The book contains articles on Baruch Spinoza, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Gottlob Frege, Martin Heidegger and Wilfrid Sellars. Brandom pursued with the goal of this book to provide his own, formulated in Making it Explicit theory of language and intentionality in a tradition, which he founded influenced by the philosophers just mentioned sees and calls it " inferentialistisch ".
